actually it is a little more complicated than that....
after years of research by biologist that study animals alone they publish their research i.e..... habitat, body functions, life span, so on and so forth
then another scientist that is working on oh say a cancer cure will see that so and so animal has the certain characteristics that would apply for the conditions needed for the experiment and then the mad scientist testing begins!!!
