You don't need a passport for out of state travel unless you're crossing one of the national borders.

I'm for a national ID card, and I've never understood the paranoia of the people who are against it. We already have a national ID system, it's called Social Security, try to do anything without that number. We need a national photo ID to go with it so it could be used for security purposes which are a legitimate constitutional power of the gov't. A card like that, combined with simple enforcement of current immigration law would solve the illegal Mexican problem overnight.
