It is more of a you have a weapon therefore you must be dangerous mentality which runs toward knives, mace, and batons as well.
Irregardless of any laws I should have the right to defend myself from someone who means harm to either myself or anyone around me.

It is action which prevents criminals from performing their acts not consequences. Consequences do help but it is better for the murdered to never have been murdered.
You cannot bring someone back to life and you cannot stop a gun wielding suicidal maniac with hugs and kisses or compliance.
