I occasionally go to meetings for the Humanist Action League, a secular humanist group at my university. I can tell you that yes, for the most part, they are calm rational people. However, there are a few self-declared atheists who always have something snide to say concerning religion, Christianity in particular, and are ready and willing to spew venom when a more rational approach would be better...just goes to show that it doesn't matter what you believe in: an asshole is an asshole.
