Interesting essay. If you're interested in another angle on this topic, I'd suggest reading A Fever in Salem: A New Interpretation of the New England Witch Trials by Laurie Carlson. It provides an interesting theory of a scientific explanation for the sudden rash of witchcraft accusations and the physical evidence of them: viral encephalitis.
