Blah. What?
You have to remember that, in all likelihood, the majority of women (and men) who were accused of witchcraft and tortured or even burned for it were probably just as christian (in terms of worldview, not faith or whatever) as the people who accused them, and the people who tortured them.
It's a lot more complicated, I think, than patriarchy versus matriarchy. Women were all ready servile to, vulnerable to, and controlled by men at this time. And besides, understanding it as partiarchy verus matriarchy would create the total historical fiction that the accusors were somehow in cahoots with the church, which there is no evidence for, otherwise, we'd have heard about it decades ago.
