I see the main difference is the spread of race diversity and multiculturalism.
Back then you have to remember the worlds cultural identities were separated into different groups throughout the globe.
Today you have a bigger mix of people and much less specific "national pride".
Not to mention people are more likely to question the government than blindly follow it's views. I think this has mostly happened as a direct result of past atrocities inflicted by governmental bad decisions.
Hence why I don't believe there would be any reason ever naming future wars WW3, WW4 and so on. The world of the past has changed immensly compared to today.
