I think you actually have a good point.
Not feeding on life in the vampire sense, but feeding on the presence of the people around them.
Example:
One night after a party about six friends and myself were walking back to my place to crash. It was fucking cold and we were huddled together for warmth, and though it was cold and wet, we were warm, talking, and laughing.
If I was walking home alone, I would have just been cold and miserable.
