This is why threads like this make me rather...annoyed. Their philosophical relevance is almost nil, but it can be turned into a rather interesting discussion.
Mr. Saturn...a barter system is a monetary system! You want X, you better have a Y or a Z...an A or a B simply won't do!!! There's still a sense of worth to said objects, and their worth determines what they can be bartered for. I need that chicken, but what good is trading a record player if the whole of society (or a portion of it) has no electricity?!
