On a personal level: because I am an existentialist. And nihilism raped my philosophy and turned it into hogwash, and gave some of my favorite philosophers a bad rep. A lot of people associate Nietzsche with nihilism, and the funny thing is, Nietzsche warns us about being nihilists...although, being nihilistic has its justifications!

On a philosophical level: Existentialism and nihilism go hand in hand in a lot of arguments. Both have no belief in God. Both have no faith in morality. Both only warrant humanity's existence on a subjective level. But that's where they differ.

Existentialism (as you know) basically states that: the self of the individual is of the utmost importance. The importance of the self over-justifies the importance of all other aspects of life. There is no proof for God, there is no proof in an eternal morality, there is no proof in any other system, but there is a shred of proof that you do indeed exist. And as such, being "you" is the only truth that matters.

Nihilism: there is no God, there is no morality, there is no eternal truth, therefore, there is nothing! Any action humanity takes, it is pointless and hopeless. There is no value to one's self. Nothing matters.

Nihilism sounds pretty in theory and all, but it's obviously a contradiction (if there is no eternal truth...then how is Nihilism justified?). And what's worse, is that so many people throw the term around like they understand it, when in reality they just learned it from the movie The Big Lebowski..."I'm a nihilist! I believe in nothing! Not even nihilism!" You know what, nihilists do believe in science, materialism, revolution.

Like anarchy...people throw the term around without actually realizing that anarchy, in a political sense, isn't total chaos. If the governments around the world were to go bye-bye...what you would have is several thousand societies. People will find like individuals...punks, goths, rednecks, etc. etc. etc.

What's even more a kick in the face...why aren't there more philosophers who are nihilists? How do they go around proclaiming the objectivity of nothingness when...(as I always like to say) nothingness is an impossibility?
