I'm was in a bit of the same boat as you, Gothic-Kid, and I Googled a bunch of gothic websites to see whether folks who definitely did consider themselves goths thought it took to be one. I didn't find even one site that said one had to dress a certain way, just ones that said goths usually dress this and that way.

One site said- what I wanted to hear, to be honest- that goth is a state of mind, not a dress code. I think if it's important to you to think of yourself as goth, then you should go ahead.

Additionally, who's going to look down on you for not being a goth? Probably the poeple who'll have the most material influence over your life (educators, employers, lenders) would rather you not emphasize gothic characteristics.
