When I moved from MN out to CA we drove through Texas, NM and Arizona and there were wind turbines everywhere. I was excited to see so many since in MN I had only seen ONE in my entire life. My parents have 120 acres in MN and they're working on a plan to put wind turbines out on the back 40 (Yeah, they really do have a back 40). They're running into red tape however, even though it's their land. If they do ever get them built, it's supposed to cut their electricity bill to almost nothing. They're also trying to get two or three solar panels on the roof just in case the windmill plan doesn't pan out.
As far as not wanting windmills in your backyard, put solar panels on your roof, or on the top of schools or buildings with large area. Early in life I had to choose between honest arrogance and hypocritical humility. I chose the former, and have seen no reason to change.
