regarding your first paragraph - God does not promise a fantastic life.. you could repent one day and the next be persecuted for being a Christian (in China for example). I am sorry that someone has told you that life is peachy once you are a Christian.. this is not so. However it sounds like you have not lost your soul... God still loves you as you live and breath right now. It is really not about what God can do for you - He has already died on the cross to forgive you for everything you have done wrong in life should you repent and turn to follow Him.... I give Him everything as it is the least I can do for what He has done for me on the cross - not because its works that bring me salvation but salvation is the pure graceful gift of God.
The Bible claims to be the inspired word of God... His promises are testable... Read 2 Kings 5 and become like Naaman did... Ask God to reveal Himself to you - who He really is.
