It is amazing how fast record after record was broken right after jet propulsion was put into regular use.
Thats Charles E. "Chuck" Yeager next to the Bell X-1. He named it Glamorous Glennis and broke the sound barrier with it in 1947. In 1953, barely 6 years later, Chuck flew the Bell X-1A up to 1,650 MPH for a record Mach 2.44.
6 years later and double the speed.
The last public air speed record was established by William J. "Pete" Knight, over Edwards Air Force Base in an X-15-2A at 4,535 MPH or Mach 6.72 on October 3rd, 1967.
The USAF has kept the top record strictly confidential yet I would say that it must exceed Mach 10 or faster.
