Yeah, moving to Japan with the plan of finding racial and social harmony and tolerance is... kind of a bad plan. You have to remember that this is the country where there were huge protests over Battle Royale. Not because it was too violent. Because it showed the kids rebelling against the school authorities.
I think such a society is possible. In fact, we're in it. Religous freedom means the freedom to evangelize as well as express. If Jehovah's Witnesses yell at you that you're going to burn in Hell, that's all well and good. That's their expression of their religious beliefs; your ass frying in a lake of fire unto the ends of time. It's only opression if they do something to make you physically or legally compelled to stick around and listen to their ranting, or hold hot irons to your feet until you repent or whatever. When people talk of the freedom of writing, speaking or thinking I cannot choose but laugh. No such thing ever existed. No such thing now exists; but I hope it will exist. But it must be hundreds of years after you and I shall write and speak no more.
