I think it was the USMC rather than the USN that wanted these ships brought back online. The battleships are obsolete for bluewater surface warfare, but they are perfect for the offshore fire support role and this is what the Marines need. I think it was a mistake to take them battleships out of active fleet status, but the Cold War was over, the USSR collapsed, and so there were alot of military cutbacks in the 1990's. |
