Yes, Tolkien wrote The Trilogy as a concious and subconcious means of rationalizing and narrating his experiences and events during WWII and the encroachment of modern, industrialization. He also understood that the enemy was, by it's nature autonomous and faceless, the primary agents of Sauron are the Wraith's; Drained of their humanity and free will by the power of the Ring and Sauron himself is depicted as faceless: Indicating that he understood that the real cause of WWII could not be narrowed down to any one group of people but that the nature of true Evil is something far more insidious and harder to fathom.
