To know what insanity is firstly you need to know what sanity is...

To some degree it can never fully be understood as everyone is completely different no matter how many things we have alike to another. Everyones view of insanity/sanity is different.

I guess a text book answer would mostly like be that insanity is when a person can no longer visualise or rationalise reality and becomes a prisoner to their own thoughts that are no longer connected with the real world.

But that's only my view...
