If we created our own gods though then why should we bow to the whims of our own creation? Ultimately we would have the higher power the power of believing or not. So by your own definition you worship a god or gods, yet you yourself believe that you (and others) have created the very things you worship and question yourself. Yes, I can see why you're confused.
