Mercy Killing Mom a Free Woman


The 64-year-old woman who shot her two terminally ill sons to death walked
out of prison as a free woman at 8:30 a.m. Monday.

Carol Carr, who served 22 months of her 5-year prison sentence, was paroled
by the Georgia State Board of Pardons and Paroles in early February. She
pleaded guilty to two counts of assisted suicide just over one year ago.

"I think Pardons and Paroles reached absolutely the correct decision to, you
know, it's time to end Carol's suffering as well and let her live the rest
of her life," said her attorney, Lee Sexton.

Carr was welcomed back into society by three women who waited outside of the
prison, holding a banner reading "We Love 'U' Carol!"

"These are tears of joy. We're just glad she's on her way home, gonna get to
be with her son and her granddaughter and the rest of her family," said one
of the women.

On June 8, 2002, Carr shot her sons -- 42-year-old Michael Randy Scott and
41-year-old Andy Byron Scott -- at their rooms in a Griffin Nursing Home.

Carr pleaded guilty to both shootings, saying she could no longer bear to
see her sons suffer from Huntington's disease, a degenerative and hereditary
illness.

Carr was set to be released in March -- the earliest possible date under
Georgia law, said Heather Hedrick, spokeswoman for the state Board of
Prisons and Paroles.

"Carol Carr has punished herself more than the prison system will ever be
able to punish her," said parole board member Mike Light.

Spalding County prosecutors were comfortable with the board's decision to
parole Carr, Hedrick said.

The only condition on Carr's parole is that she may not reside with her
remaining son who suffers from the early stages of Huntington's disease.
Carr also cannot serve as his primary caregiver, parole board members said.
Instead, Carr will live with her ex-husband, Charles.
